Time Is Running Out! Sign the Petition to Overturn HB 319!
Posted December 8th, 2011 by Pathadler

December 8, 2011 • www.uaprogressiveaction.com
Republicans recently gerrymandered all of Ohio's congressional districts to "pack" all Democrats into the fewest number of districts possible. Although Ohio is roughly 50% Republican and 50% Democrat, over 75% of the newly drawn districts are GOP! Currently signatures are being collected to place the Repeal HB 319 measure on the ballot in 2012. But we don't have much time to gather the necessary 231,150 valid signatures -- our deadline is December 20, 2011! Make sure your name is counted! Let the Statehouse Republicans know you won't stand for such underhanded tactics to win elections!
Sign the Petition!
Petitions can be signed this Saturday and Sunday morning, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Please show your appreciation for Colin's support by purchasing a cup of coffee or treat. He's been a big supporter of UAPA and progressive causes near and dear to us all!
Please note: For the most current signing locations, please check our Facebook page. Additionally, petitions may be signed at the Ohio Democratic Party Headquarters. Please call first to confirm availability of times: 614-221-6563.

Court Ordered Child Support? BANNED! The Unintended Consequences of Issue 3
Posted November 7th, 2011 by Pathadler
November 7, 2011 • Get Out and Vote Edition • www.uaprogressiveaction.com
Ohio's Issue 3 is a disaster waiting to happen and current polling shows it passing on November 8th by wide margin. Unless you help get the word out.
Every major Ohio newspaper has come out against Ohio Issue 3 even traditionally conservative papers that endorsed Issue 2.
- Athens News: Issue 3 will disrupt, complicate health care in Ohio (Oct. 26)
- Cleveland Plain Dealer: No on Issue 3: editorial (Oct. 22)
- Canton Repository: Editorial: Let’s not go down this road again (Oct. 21)
- Akron Beacon Journal: No on Issue 3 (Oct. 16)
- Toledo Blade: No on Issue 3 (Oct. 16)
- Athens Messenger: Statewide ballot issues ... our endorsements (Oct. 16)
- Columbus Dispatch: Health-care amendment wouldn’t override federal law, might cause problems (Oct. 14)
Plunderbund: "For example, if Issue 3 passes, Kasich would be unable to attempt many of the reforms on Ohio’s Worker Compensation system that he’s been promising. And conservatives would likely find any new anti-abortion laws to be in violation of Ohio’s constitution under the changes implemented in Issue 3. Reporting of new contagious diseases? Banned under Issue 3. New school immunizations? BANNED!"
Read the research Innovation Ohio published about the amendment's unintended consequences.
Issue 3: Sloppy, costly and wildly off-target
This year it's easy to remember: NO-NO-NO on Issues 1, 2 and 3.
Make no mistake. The eyes of the nation are on Ohio right now. Our opponents are the Karl Roves and Koch Brothers of the world, and they are looking for cracks in our resolve.
The number of "NO" votes cast by Tuesday, November 8, will either encourage or discourage these deep-pocketed special interest groups. It's our time to mark off the distance they'll need to cover in the future!

Our next Coffee and Conversation is scheduled for Saturday, Novmber 5, 9:00 a.m. at Park Creek Kitchen, 2124 Arlington Avenue. There will be a $3.00 charge per person for coffee, tea, juice and muffins. Our speaker will be Brian Rothenberg, executive director of ProgressOhio. Because the election is the following Tuesday, November 8, we hope to send out a group after the meeting to gather petition signatures to repeal HB 319 and help end gerrymandering in Ohio.
Learn More About Issue 22 and Why You Should Vote Yes
The Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities has a replacement levy on the November 8, 2011, ballot. Money raised by the levy will help maintain the basic services for children and adults in Franklin County who have developmental disabilities.
Programs at risk if Issue 22 doesn't pass include Adult and Child Behavioral Support, Dual Diagnosis Clinics, Early Intervention and Early Childhood Education Programs. Also at risk is supported living, and job and home-based training and transportation.
Many of the 16,000 children and adults served by The Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities have either physical or mental disabilities. The extra support helps children with developmental disabilities grow into self-reliant adults and enables adults to be productive, active members of the community. The current levy will expire in 2012 and if passed Issue 22 will replace it with the same amount of millage.
UAPA is Looking for a Letters to the Editor Coordinator
We're looking for an organized, motivated volunteer to coordinate our Letters to the Editor program. The duties of this postiion are to help generate letter topics and talking points (with help from UAPA's executive committee), make assignments to volunteers who have indicated their willingness to write letters, and ensure the volunteer letter writers follow through. You aren't required to write letters but encouraged to do so. Please contact John Lytle at jlytle@columbus.rr.com.

October 1st Coffee and Conversation Features Redistricting
Posted September 29th, 2011 by Pathadler
September 29, 2011 • www.uaprogressiveaction.com
October 1st Coffee and Conversation Features Redistricting
Coffee and Conversation will meet at a new venue on Saturday, October 1 at 9:00 a.m. We're excited that Park Creek Kitchen, 2124 Arlington Avenue, has agreed to open their doors for UAPA. There will be a $3.00 charge per person for coffee, tea and muffins, which we think is a pretty good deal. Visit Park Creeks's website for more information about the restaurant and a map. Our October speaker will be Jim Slagle, Ohio Campaign for Accountable Redistricting, to discuss the current plans for redistricting in Ohio. We look forward to seeing you!
The American Jobs Act and Ohio
What would the American Jobs Act do for Ohio? Ohio would receive:
• Immediate investments in highways, transit, rail and aviation of at least $1,051,800,000 that would provide approximately 13,700 local jobs.
• $1,093,800,000 in funds to support up to 14,200 educator and first responder jobs -- preventing layoffs of up to 280,000 teachers, while supporting the hiring of tens of thousands more and keeping cops and firefighters on the job.
• $985,500,000 in funding that will improve classrooms and upgrade our schools to meet 21st century needs, supporting 12,800 Ohio jobs.
• $577,200,000 to put construction workers to work rehabilitating and refurbishing hundreds of thousands of vacant and foreclosed homes and businesses to revitalize local communities
• $148,300,000 in investment in the next fiscal year for facilities modernization at Ohio's community colleges.
The plan doesn't add to the deficit and includes reforms to the unemployment insurance system to help those without jobs transition to the workplace.
But it won't pass unless Republicans in Congress agree to act -- and that's where you come in. Will you call Rep. Stivers now and ask him to pass the American jobs act? See: http://my.democrats.org/page/s/american-jobs-plan-call-report for a script and to report the call.

2010 Mid-Ohio Food Bank Drive - This Weekend
Posted January 21st, 2010 by uamakIn celebration of Martin Luther King Day and President Obama's inauguration last year, progressive volunteers organized a food drive to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank that raised almost $3000 in cash and 3000 pounds of food, and we hope to repeat that success again this weekend! Volunteers will be conducting a food drive this Friday through Sunday, January 22-24, in their neighborhoods to once again benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
Join us in canvassing your neighborhood for food and cash donations. The only requirement is to hand in your donations at a drop-off location (identified below) near your home by Sunday afternoon at 5:00 PM.
Donations will be delivered to the Mid Ohio Food Bank on Monday, January 25.
If you aren’t able to canvass, please consider dropping off food donations to one of the drop-off locations listed below. Encourage friends and family to drop off donations as well by forwarding this Action Alert on to them. Here are some sobering statistics to consider:
- Nearly 20% of children in Ohio live in poverty.
- Food requests at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank pantries are up 15% over last year.
